IIT Kharagpur invites first-year students to attend online classes from hostels
The institute has extended the option to attend classes online on campus for those students who are facing resource constraints at home. As a precautionary against the pandemic spread, the classes are being attended online.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur first-year students got the option to attend online classes from the campus next month. Students interested to come to the campus will be lodged in the hostel rooms vacated by second-year students, according to Telegraph India. The ongoing pandemic situation delayed the construction of the hostel meant for the first-year students. With the subsiding COVID-19 cases and lifted restrictions, the institute has resumed the construction process of the hostel. While the first-year students will be welcomed in phases, the second-year students have been asked to vacate the hostel by the third week of April to make space.
The institute has extended the option to attend classes online on campus for those students who are facing resource constraints at home. As a precautionary against the pandemic spread, the classes are being attended online. The second-year students will spend the summer recess at home and come back once third-year classes start.
IIT Kharagpur registrar Tamal Nath told the media that the construction of the new hostel had been delayed because of the pandemic.
βWe hope to end the work on time,β he said. If the work is not completed on time, the students who will be admitted in August will be accommodated in rented places, an official said. With the increase in the number of students due to the introduction of the quota for the economically weaker section within the general category in 2019, the construction of a hostel became imperative.

The institutes recalled second, third and fourth-year students to the campus so they could write the end-semester exams in offline mode from April 7 to 14. However, they finally wrote the exams in online mode after being given the option.
