India's first University of Forestry to come up in Telangana

The University's main campus will be in Mulugu. Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University was connected with FCRI at Mulugu in the Siddipet district. The university will be the first of its kind in the country to provide forestry education.

India's first University of Forestry to come up in Telangana

The Telangana Legislative Assembly and Council has given nod to the University of Forestry (UOF) Act, 2022, opening the way for the transformation of FCRI (Forest College and Research Institute) Hyderabad into a full-fledged University of Forestry (UoF). The University's main campus will be in Mulugu. Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University was connected with FCRI at Mulugu in the Siddipet district. The university will be the first of its kind in the country to provide forestry education.

In World, only two countries, i.e. China and Russia have the Forestry Universities. Now, India will have its first University of Forestry (UOF) in Telangana. "The University aims to develop Agro-Forestry models suitable for different Agroecological situations, apart from conventional forestry operations so as to reduce pressure on natural forests, economic upliftment of farming communities and enhance ecological conditions," the varsity stated.

It has been proposed to begin additional 18 programmes like PhD courses, diploma and certificate courses in urban forestry, nursery management, agro-forestry, tribal livelihood enhancement, forest entrepreneurship, climate-smart forestry and forest parks management. The total number of students to be enrolled will be 726, an additional 360 to the present strength of 366 and the employee’s strength will be 210 which is an additional 92 to the present strength of 118.

On the last day of the Monsoon session, the Telangana state Assembly unanimously passed two more resolutions urging the Centre to name the new Parliament building in New Delhi after Dr B.R. Ambedkar, and also withdraw the new Electricity Amendment Bill 2022 proposed by the Centre keeping in view the interests of farmers and poorer sections.
