As per the official data, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has crossed the 1,000-mark in patents generated by it in India and abroad.

The number of the patent filed by IIT Madras also doubled in the last five years, and when it comes to abroad, the institute filed the maximum patent in the US.

By March 31 this year, IIT Madras filed 1,204 patents in India and 529 outside India. Out of the 529 patents filed abroad, 155 patent applications were filed in the US itself. IIT-Madras bears seventy per cent of the expense of filing foreign patents, and the remaining 30 per cent is on the inventor.

"Another significant factor was the large number of international patents (218) filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The PCT assists applicants in seeking patent protection internationally for their inventions. By filing one international patent application under the PCT, applicants can subsequently seek protection for an invention in all the countries that are party to the PCT (153 countries, as of date)," said Ravindra Gettu, Dean, Centre for ICSR.

He also said the government has taken various steps recently to increase the patents filed in the country and abroad. An IP Cell has been formed at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation (ICSR) to sensitise students or faculty on the significance of monetisation and IP Protection.
