The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Sambalpur has commenced the second edition of its 12-day weekend certificate program, the Small Business Management Training Programme, aimed at master weavers from western Odisha. This initiative is conducted in partnership with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and is organized under the Centre for Responsible Business.

Focus on Key Business Skills

The training program covers essential topics including design, digital marketing, GST compliance, financial management, operations, and communication skills. Approximately 25 master weavers are participating, with a strong emphasis on leveraging digital platforms such as Flipkart, Amazon, and ONDC to enhance market reach.

Commitment to India's Handloom Industry

Professor Mahadeo Jaiswal, Director of IIM Sambalpur, underscored the institute’s dedication to supporting India’s indigenous handloom sector. He pointed out the decline in India’s share of global textile production—from 25% before British colonization to less than 3% today. “The textile industry is crucial for India’s development, and we are taking steps to promote marketing and distribution,” he stated.

Pioneering Business Education in Vernacular Languages

Highlighting the unique approach of the program, Professor Jaiswal noted that IIM Sambalpur is the first management institute in India to offer business education in vernacular languages, specifically tailored for local artisans. He mentioned the necessity of providing fundamental business knowledge in areas like GST and invoicing, designed to meet the needs of skilled master weavers.

Future Plans for Market Creation and Incubation Support

Looking ahead, the next phase of training will focus on market creation skills, including the five Ps of marketing: Product, Price, Place, Promotion, and People. The institute also plans to provide incubation support for startups aimed at global product marketing. The ultimate goal is to establish a 'Bunkar Valley', akin to Silicon Valley, to elevate India's weaving industry on the international stage.
