Bombay HC bars institute-level admissions in private medical colleges
The high court upheld the PGMEB communication that stated - allowing institute level admissions for UG and PG medical courses contradicts the PGMEB's decision of July 24, 2023.
Bombay high court has ruled against the decision of Maharashtra State Common Entrance Test (CET) to permit private medical colleges to fill the vacant seats of MBBS and BDS at the institute level.
As per the report of Hindustan Times, the division bench of Justice AS Chandurkar and Justice Abhay Mantri on November 10 said that the CET Cells's decision is contrary to the law.
The bench emphasised that three Common Admission Process (CAP) rounds and one stray vacancy round had already been conducted. Therefore, the State CET Cell had no authority to issue further notices allowing private medical colleges to fill the remaining vacant seats at their level.
The Background
Medical aspirants Aarya Thakare and Saniya Rahman from Nagpur challenged the PGMEB communication of October 10, which prohibited institute-level admissions. These students cannot secure seats through CAP rounds and secured MBBS seats at NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre in Nagpur through other quotas. However, PGMEB's subsequent notice jeopardised their admissions.
Medical college fees can't exceed quota ceiling, says FRA
After receiving several complaints, the Fee Regulating Authority (FRA) Mumbai has issued a notice to all the private and unaided colleges offering courses in medicine, dental, ayurveda and other allied health sciences that they cannot charge more than three times the regular fees from students admitted under the institutional quota and not more than five times from students in the NRI quota, as reported by TOI.
