Government Omandurar Medical College Hospital (GOMCH) gets the Central government's nod for 28 postgraduate medical seats as confirmed by the State Health Minister Ma Subramanian.

The PG medical education in Tamil Nadu is going to be strengthened by the Centre's approval for starting postgraduate medical courses in 6 disciplines in Government Omandurar Medical College Hospital (GOMCH) with 28 seats. GOMCH started its journey in the year 2015 with 100 MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) seats.

The Union government has approved six seats each in MD (Doctor of Medicine) in Paediatrics, MD in General Medicine, MS (Master of Surgery) in General Surgery, three seats each in MD in Anaesthesia, MS in Orthopaedics and four seats in MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This approval of 28 PG medical seats has increased the number of PG medical seats in the state to 1,992 from 1,964.

State Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed this after inaugurating various health facilities. As per reports, students will be enrolled from this academic year. The minister said that the Centre has also approved 50 more MBBS seats at Coimbatore Government Medical College. The state has received a total of 1500 additional MBBS seats this year.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had written to the Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya against the draft Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations. Stalin said in the letter pointing out section 11.2 of the draft that it attempts to centralize and designate the directorate general of health services, ministry of health and family welfare, GOI as the designated authority for counselling for state quota seats, as reported by TOI.

He added the status-quo should be maintained on the admissions for state quota PG medical seats.
