Competency-based MBBS curriculum helped attain WFME recognition: IMA President

NMC has received WFME recognition for a period of 10 years. As part of this recognition, all the 706 existing medical colleges in India will become WFME-accredited

Restructuring of the competency-based medical education model and incorporation of AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics and Communication Model) in the MBBS curriculum has brought Indian medical colleges at par with international standards and helped Indian medical colleges achieve WFME recognition said, IMA President, Dr. Sharad Kumar Agarwal.

Dr. Sharad Agrawal, National President, IMA thanked the World Federation for Medical Education led by Dr. Ricardo for granting recognition to the National Medical Commission, as a result of which, 706 medical colleges geographically located in India stand accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education and thereby would get included in the Directory of Medical Colleges of World Health Organization.

NMC has received the recognition for a period of 10 years. As part of this recognition, all the 706 existing medical colleges in India will become WFME accredited and the new medical colleges that will be set up in the coming 10 years will automatically become WFME accredited.

Following this recognition Indian medical graduates will be able to pursue postgraduate training and practice in other countries that require WFME recognition, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

This recognition is for a period of 10 years prospectively and every new medical college that shall be created in India during the said period would be taken as accredited by the World Federation for Medical Education and resultantly would find entry in the said Directory of Medical Schools.

Competency-based medical education

IMA President has stated that structuring of the competency-based medical education model created by the Academic Council in line with the guidelines prescribed by the World Federation for Medical Education and AETCOM (Attitude, Ethics and Communication Model) incorporated in the curriculum which made it at par with international standards, helped Indian medical colleges achieve WFME recognition.

He also appreciated the contribution of Dr. Russell D’Souza in shaping the AETCOM Module with Dr. Vedprakash Mishra, Chairperson of the NMC Academic Council.

The NMC launched a competency-based undergraduate medical education model incorporating the AETCOM Model from the academic session 2019-20 across India and the first CBME batch of Medical Graduates would come out in November 2023 upon clearing their final MBBS Examination that the recognition of World Federation for Medical Education stands accorded.

“Indeed, it is not only a dream come true in terms of a very lofty recognition of Indian Medical Education but it has also made Indian Medical Education stand tall for its genuine patronage to the invocation of quality-centric incorporations in medical education so as to gain Global parity which stands validated by the recognition extended by World Federation for Medical Education,” said Dr Agarwal.

It (WFME Recognition) will increase the international recognition and reputation of Indian medical schools and professionals, facilitate academic collaborations and exchanges promote continuous improvement and innovation in medical education and foster a culture of quality assurance among medical educators and institutions.

President of the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME), Dr. Ricardo who is on a visit to India appreciated the immaculate work being dispensed by IMA in the interest of the medical profession as well as medical education in a consistent manner with immaculate zeal and commitment.
