Covid Duty By PG Medicos Should Be Considered as Bond Service: HC Directs Colleges To Return Original Certificates
Madras High Court Bench comprising Justice GR Swaminathan directs medical colleges, including Thanjavur Medical College, to return original certificates without any delay.
Madras High Court recently passed a judgement that COVID duty performed by PG medicos should be treated as bond service. The High Court bench with Justice GR Swaminathan further instructed that medical students shall not retain educational certificates of medicos for any reason.
The Bench instructed the Dean of Government Thanjavur Medical College to return the original certificates of petitioner postgraduate medicos.
What is the Case?
A postgraduate medical student joined a PG medical course as a non-service candidate and signed a bond undertaking to serve for a period of two years for the government of Tamil Nadu, once the course concludes. The bond was later reduced for one year and he completed his PG course from Government Thanjavur Medical College in April 2022. Now, the medico approached the HC bench to treat his service as completed and the college must return his original documents, as reported by Medical Dialogues.
Consequently, the petitioner Medicos argued that although the service was rendered during COVID-19, still the service shall be treated as bond service.
Madras High Court accepted the petition and directed the Dean of Government Thanjavur Medical College to return the original certificates of the petitioner
“I would therefore give a direction to the respondents to accommodate adjusting the period already completed with the bond period and return their educational certificates within a period of three weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of this order” The official verdict states.
