Dr Ambedkar Medical College to be first of its kind, says Governor BS Koshyari

On the first day of the Maharashtra assembly session, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has termed the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Super Specialty Institute of Medical Education and Research (DBASSIMER) to be the first of its kind.

"It would run 17 postgraduate programmes and 11 super speciality courses and have 615 beds," the Governor added, as reported by TOI.

DBASSIMER Details

As per the senior officials of minister Nitin Raut, DBASSIMER would be another tertiary healthcare service centre that would be at par with the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH). It is expected to be completed in the next couple of years and it is proposed to come at Indora under Raut's North Nagpur constituency.

The estimated expense to set up DBASSIMER is INR 1,024 crore and it could be augmented to 900 beds and 28 postgraduate and super speciality departments/courses and dental OPD. The planning is also to include a nursing college offering MSc and BSc courses at 8.5 acre land near Kalamna Ring Road.

The project is seen as a dream project of Raut, and it was sanctioned during his last stint as EGS minister in the Democratic Front government under former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan in 2014. The project was reportedly pushed to the backburner after the government changed but revived after the deadly second wave of Covid-19.
