After a successful meeting with the Maharashtra medical education and research director, the resident doctors in the state have called off their strike.

Maharashtra's resident doctors who were on strike seeking the immediate start of NEET PG 2021 Counselling and recruitment of non-academic junior resident doctors equal to residents have called off their protest on January 4 after a successful meeting with the state medical and research director.

Scores of resident doctors in the state started strike from Friday to demand recruitment of equal numbers of non-academic junior resident doctors as the number of residents in the colleges.

Central Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) president Avinash Dahiphale issued a statement on January 3 evening stating that recruitment of medical officers/house officers in all corporation medical colleges/ government medical colleges and hospitals as per requirement in the view of the delay in NEET-PG counselling has been addressed.

He also added that irregularities related to stipends at a few medical colleges will also be addressed soon.

“So, as our three out of four demands are met and considering the sharp rise in the number of Omicron cases in the state, the Central MARD committee has decided to call off the strike and resume duties,” Mr Dahiphale said, as reported by The Hindu.

He said that the demand of NEET PG state counselling is not under the power of the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), hence it can only be addressed after directions from the national medical counselling committee.

Protesting resident doctors in Delhi also called off their strike on Friday and resumed services.

Due to unprecedented delay in NEET PG 2021 Counselling, resident doctors all across the country protested to expedite the counselling process. The doctors were overburdened in the absence of the first year postgraduate medical students to support them.

The protest was initiated by the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) on November 27 and FORDA called it off on December 31 after meeting with Delhi Police.
