The government has decided to postpone the NEET PG 2021 exam by at least four months. The official release says the decision has been taken to boost availability of healthcare professionals to provide COVID-19 care. A PIB release said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a series of key decisions to ensure availability of enough number of healthcare personnel to deal with Covid-19 situation.
Apart from NEET PG 2021 postponement for four months, the other key decisions approved by PMO are listed below:
• Medical personnel who completes 100 days of Covid duties will be given Prime Minister’s Distinguished Covid National Service Samman
• They will be given priority in Government recruitments
• Medical interns to be deployed in duties under the supervision of their faculty
• Final Year MBBS students can be utilized for tele-consultation and monitoring of mild Covid cases under supervision of faculty
• B.Sc./GNM qualified nurses to be utilized in full-time Covid nursing duties under the supervision of senior doctors and nurses
As per the original schedule, NEET PG 2021 was supposed to be held on April 18, 2021. On April 15, 2021, the government had issued an official notification regarding the postponement of NEET PG 2021 exam. As per the latest announcement, the NEET PG 2021 exam will not be held before August 31, 2021. Students who have been waiting for the exam date are disappointed with the government’s decision. They contend that the decision won’t increase the number of healthcare professionals available for Covid-19 duty. Rather government should have given priority to hold NEET PG 2021 exam as quickly as possible so that students could serve Covid patients.
Check how students have reacted on Twitter:
"Postponement of NEETPG by a total of 8 months (4+4) is disheartening and discouraging to the medical aspirants. No amount of samman medal can make up for this loss. Should have done in Jan2021. Highest level of administrative failure," a candidate said.
Terming the decision a retrograde, a student said, "This impulsive retrograde decision of postponing PG NEET will create more shortages of Drs.Government is making us(PG Aspirants) scapegoat in the name of Crisis.. In fact take PGNEET at the earliest to bring all 'Library Drs' in system."
Another student asked when an election can happen in this situation why exam is being postponed. "Election with rallies of lakhs of people can be done but not a entrance exam which can increase pool of PG resident doctors in various govt and private hospitals without loss of a session," the student said.
Sharing how things will be further complicated, a student said, "I am 100% sure that whoever advised PM for postponement of NEET PG have never given NEET exam in their lifetime. They just don’t understand the psychi of medicos, postponing the exam will only add months to Pre PG preparation,Now they won’t join Covid duties for 4 more months."
Another candidate said that manpower will be available only after the NEET PG 2021 exam and government should have focussed to hold the exam early. "Worst decision Ever by PM,simply why dont they understand the basic thing that manpower will be available only after NEET PG exams rather than postponing it .It will directly affects the Postgraduate/superspeciality 3rd yr Examgoing Residents," the candidate said.
"This quixotic decision of postponing PGneet will create more shortages of drs+add burden on serving junior drs.Students aspiring for pg neet r Not in health care delivery System -they r studying for pg neet-“Library drs”.Infact take pgneet at d earliest to bring all drs in system," a professor reacted.
