PIL filed at Bombay HC for scraping NEET PG
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) is filed in the Bombay High Court seeking the scraping of the postgraduate medical entrance National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-PG).
A Mumbai-based media consultant has approached the court and pointed towards the acute shortage of doctors in India during the pandemic. The PIL has not only questioned the need for the entrance test for medical specialization when a person is competent to become a doctor, but it also said that many candidates who score high in NEET PG are not able to pursue postgraduate medical education due to the high cost of the private education.
The petitioner has requested the court to either direct the government to discontinue NEET-PG or double the intake capacity of PG courses. The petitioner said in the PIL that after proper discussion with various educational, legal and medical fields experts, it is concluded that if the NEET-PG can be scrapped, doubling the PG medical seats would be easier. It will also help the MBBS graduates to pursue the PG medical courses as per their free will.
Until now, qualifying NEET-PG is mandatory for admission to MD/MS/PG Diploma courses. Even foreign nationals who want to take admission into these medical specialization courses need to clear NEET-PG.
