Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to mention before Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud led bench regarding the NEET EWS quota matter today.

The Centre has decided to retain the existing INR 8 lakh annual income criteria for the determination of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) with respect to the ongoing admissions to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) postgraduate courses. It also decided that the revised criteria suggested by the expert committee will be adopted from the next admission cycle.

The latest is, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of the Centre will mention this decision before Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud led bench, as reported by Bar and Bench.

The Central government had announced a 10% reservation for the EWS category for All India Quota (AIQ) medical seats. Later the top court of India expressed its doubts regarding the INR 8 lakh annual income criteria for the determination of the EWS category. First, the Centre justified its decision on EWS criteria and later decided to revisit the criteria. Now, the Centre has informed Supreme Court that it has accepted the recommendation of the expert committee to retain the EWS criteria for the ongoing medical admissions.

The Centre had also said that it will conduct NEET PG 2021 Counselling only after taking a final decision on EWS criteria and Supreme Court's decision on OBC and EWS reservation. It resulted in a nationwide strike of resident doctors demanding to expedite NEET PG 2021 Counselling. However, now the counselling is expected to begin from next week.
