Ukraine returned medical students: Telangana to fund their education

After a huge debate on why Indian students go abroad to pursue medical courses, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has said that the medical students from Telangana who had gone to Ukraine to pursue medical courses will have their studies funded by the state government.

In the state Assembly today, he said that 740 students from Telangana were studying medicine in Ukraine and they have now returned to the state.

"We will write to the Centre to say we will support them," Mr Rao said, as reported by NDTV.

Massive debate is going on in India - why Indian medical students go abroad

The Central government has evacuated nearly 18,000-plus Indians from Ukraine, most of them are medical students who went to Ukraine to study medicine as the cost of such courses are cheaper in Ukraine.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, this issue has been highlighted big time in India, especially after a student, Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagowdar from Karnataka lost his life in the Russian shelling in Kharkiv.

Some are blaming the reservation system and high cost of medical education in India and others like Union Minister Pralhad Joshi opines that the majority of the students who study medical courses in countries like Ukraine, fail to clear FMGE which is the mandatory exam for getting a license to practice medicine in India.

Naveen Shekharappa's father had said "The donation is very high for those wanting to study medicine here. Intelligent students will go abroad to study, and they spend a lesser amount when compared to Karnataka. Here, a student will have to pay in crores to get a medical seat under quota."
