UPSC IAS Exam 2021:Supreme Court decision about the extra attempt tomorrow
The Supreme Court heard various arguments from all the parties, some of them were hilarious. The SC has reserved their judgement for tomorrow. ASG SV Raju said that "Current affairs for 2020 would only be about COVID. This ( IAS Prelims) is not an exam for which elaborate preparation is required. One month of studying, one hour every day is sufficient".

In the argument, the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) put the submission that "the only ground on which the court can interfere is if the policy framed is completely capricious and arbitrary.", on this submission, the bench said that you are hiring for the Joint Secretary post without any examination, we would like to see that also. The bench said "for lateral entry, the age limit is 45 and no attempt bar. The government is agreeable to give concession to attempts barred, but not to age barred ones. But the government is allowing entries without age bar.
The Supreme Court (SC) on February 8 decided about an extra attempt in the UPSC IAS exam 2021. Earlier, on the February 6, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Central Government agreed to provide an extra compensatory attempt to all the candidates who had their last attempt in 2020 and fulfil all the eligibility criteria otherwise. Centre contended that providing an extra attempt to all will have a profound effect on the right to equality for all the other candidates.

The Centre submitted a condition for an extra attempt that the candidate must have had the last attempt last year and he or she must fulfil all the eligibility criteria this year also except the age factor. This extra attempt will be limited to this year only and no compensation of any kind on the count of coronavirus pandemic will be provided after this year.

The petition for an extra attempt in the IAS 2021 exam was filed soon after the IAS prelims exam last year. The petitioner filed a Pubic Interest Litigation (PIL) for an extra attempt. In the initial hearings, the Centre was reluctant to provide an extra attempt in the IAS exam 2021, but when the SC asked for an affidavit from an appropriate authority, the Centre and UPSC both agreed for the attempt with certain conditions.
