As per the revised stipends, for Junior Research Fellow (JRF), the stipend increased to Rs 37000 from Rs 31000, for Senior Research Fellow (SRF), it is increased to Rs 42,000 from Rs 35,000, for Research Associate - I, it is increased to INR 58000 from 47000, for Research Associate-II, it increased to 61000 from 49000 and for Research Associate -III, it increased to 67000 from 54000.
The All-India Research Scholars Association (AIRSA) has been demanding a fellowship hike for over a year. They were requesting UGC India to consider their demands to revise the NON-NET fellowship. Since 2006, the fellowship amount for non-NET PhD research scholars has remained unchanged at Rs 8000.
AIRSA statement earlier said, "Timely and regular disbursement of fellowships from funding agencies will provide research scholars with much-needed financial stability, enabling them to focus on their research without financial worries."
The government estimates that this increase in stipends will lead to an additional expenditure of approximately Rs 725 crore and expects it to significantly boost the research and development ecosystem while providing much-needed support to scholars and researchers.
