JNU to Accept NET Scores for PhD Admission 2024-25; No Entrance Exam Required

JNU PhD admission will be based on National Eligibility Test (NET) scores instead of PhD entrance test in accordance with UGC National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has revised PhD admission criteria in accordance with the University Grants Commission's (UGC) National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. JNU has announced that it will accept the National Eligibility Test (NET) scores for admission to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes instead of the entrance test organised by the National Testing Agency (NTA). 

"UGC to help the students with one national entrance test as part of the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, has decided to vide its Public Notice dated March 27, 2024, that the score of the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC and CSIR can be used by the Universities/HEIs for PhD Admission in place of entrance test." The official notification reads. 

JNU PhD Admission 2024

Reportedly, JNU PhD admission 2024-25 will be conducted based on NET scores instead of entrance test scores. 

"Accordingly, JNU has decided to use NET score in place of the entrance test conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to PhD Programmes in the University from the academic session 2024-25," the notification further added.

JNU PhD Admission 2024 Criteria 

The important features of JNU PhD admission 2024  are summarized as under:

  1. Applications for PhD admission will be invited from eligible candidates under the following categories:
  • JRF qualified category (Category 1) only and,
  • NET Score categories (Category 1: JRF qualified candidates, Category 2: Candidates qualified for Assistant Professorship without JRF).
  1. Admission through the JRF Category will be accomplished as per current standards where 100% weightage will be allocated to viva-voce. 
  2. Admission under NET Score Sorts will replace the entrance examination. The weightage for NET Score and viva-voce shall be in ratio of 70% and 30% respectively.
