Students can use CBSE applied mathematics for UG admissions: UGC

The Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE introduced the new subject Applied Mathematics for students of Classes 11 and 12.

University Grants Commission (UGC) in its latest notification has stated that CBSE applied maths subject can be used for UG admissions. Urging universities to consider Applied Mathematics for admissions, the Commission said that the Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE introduced the new subject Applied Mathematics for students of Classes 11 and 12.

Stating that Applied Mathematics involves 80 percent marks for theory and 20 percent marks for practical work in the board examination,  UGC said that the subject may be considered at par with Mathematics while calculating aggregate marks for admission in courses of humanities and commerce, other than pure sciences. The notification released by UGC reads, β€œThe Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced a course Applied Mathematics to students of classes XI and XII. A copy of the letter received from the CBSE is enclosed. The subject involves 80% marks for theory and zo % marks for practical work in the board examination. This subject is offered under Academic stream and has curriculum specifications that are compatible with the other major subjects.”

It further adds, β€œThis subject is a regular academic subject. The marks obtained by the candidates in this subject may be included for calculating the aggregate marks for deciding the eligibility for admission. Hence, Applied Mathematics may be considered at par with Mathematics while calculating aggregate marks for admission in courses of humanities and commerce, other than pure sciences. You are requested to take appropriate action for recognition of this new subject for the purpose of admission of students in degree programs.”

The Commission has asked the Vice-Chancellors of all Universities to take appropriate action for recognition of this new subject for the purpose of admission of students in degree programs.
