Earlier, the higher education department planned to conduct offline mode exams for all college students from January 19. However, it was postponed considering the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced that it will hold the exams in colleges and universities across the state in online mode only. Despite the COVID relaxations and permission to reopen the schools and colleges on February 1, the government has decided to go ahead with online mode. The online mode exams are scheduled to be held from February 1 to 20.
"The preparations have been already made for online exams. The question papers were also set. So, the upcoming semester exams will be held online," an official in the higher education department said.
Earlier, the higher education department planned to conduct offline mode exams for all college students from January 19. However, it was postponed considering the surge in COVID-19 cases. Further, it was decided to conduct an online mode of exams to avoid delays in completing the semester.

The government of Tamil Nadu has earlier announced to reopen schools and colleges in the state considering the academic loss that students are facing amid the closure. As per the official announcement, schools, colleges and universities in Tamil Nadu will be reopened from February 1. Following a spate of infections, the government had ordered schools to close while permitting classes for higher secondary students till Pongal (mid-January). Later, all the higher secondary schools were asked to remain shut till this month-end.

The number of guests at weddings has been fixed at 100, while only 50 are allowed for funerals, according to the new rules. Places of worship will be allowed to remain open on all days.
