The Indian Institution of Science(IISc) Bengaluru has been ranked as the best research institution in the country in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2021.

The Indian Institution of Science has been ranked as the best research institution in the country with a score of 86.48 and it is followed by the Indian Institutions of Technology (IITs) with IIT Madras securing the second rank followed by IIT Bombay at third. The two other institutions ranked among the top five reserch institutions in the country are IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur

Shiksha was the first to announce that this year NIRF will have a new category of Rankings where institutions will be ranked based on their research activities.

Announcing the Research Ranking, Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan said: โ€œThis year a new category has been introduced to recognize institutions doing good work in the area of research.โ€

The IISc Bengaluru has also been ranked as the best institution in the โ€˜Universityโ€™ category of the NIRF Rankings 2021. 

Talking about Research rankings, Prof. K.K. Aggarwal Chairman National Board of Accreditation (NBA) said that there are some institutions which are good in research but not that good in academics, so a new category has been introduced this year.

The institutions have been ranked under various categories such as, Overall, Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Architecture, Law, Medicine, Dental and Research.

In the Research Category, the institutions have been ranked based on five parameters, Quantitative Research, Qualitative Research, Students and Faculty Contribution, Outreach and Inclusivity and Perception. IISc has scored highest in Qualitative Research with a score of 96.00, while it has scored 95.03 in Quantitative Research.
