    Q:   How can I get admission to the MA by Research course at IIT Bombay?

    A: 

    Candidates seeking admission with a valid Bachelor's degree with 60% aggregate (55% aggregate for SC/ST/PwD) are eligible to apply. Eligible students can visit the IIT Bombay website (iitb.ac.in) to fill out the online form. Further, the selection is through GATE/MAAT exam followed by an interview round.

    Q:   What is the seat intake for MA by Research offered by IIT Bombay?

    A: 

    The total seat intake for MA by Research is 20. This seat intake is as per the 2022-2023 sanctioned strength. Additionally, the seats are reserved for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)/Other Backward Class Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL)/Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Benchmark Disability (PwD).

    A: 

    IIT Bombay MA students opting for hostel have to pay hostel fee in addition to regular admission fee. In hostel, mess charges are added only if the student opts for it. The fee will be less in case of hostel without mess facility. Check below mess fee for IIT Bombay MA students:

    Q:   What is the eligibility criteria of MA by Research offered by IIT Bombay?

    A: 

    Candidates holding a bachelor’s degree (BA/ BCom or other degrees) or a four-year BA, BS, BTech or an earlier postgraduate degrees such as MA, MSc, etc. with a minimum of 60% aggregate for GN/ EWS/ OBC (NC) and 55% aggregate for SC/ ST/ PwD can apply for MA by Research. Aspirants shall keep the documents for verification ready at the time of admission as well.

    The HSS department at IITBombay is introducing the Master of Arts by Research (MA. Res) with precisely this emphasis. The faculty members in the department represent diverse areas of expertise and have considerable experience teaching with an emphasis on research skills while accommodating disciplinary crossovers with ease. This is especially important since many of the concerns of the Humanities and Social Sciences requireamulti-disciplinary approach. Our students have been successful both in working at the interfaces of different areas and in transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries in their work. The programme combines course work to build student competence in specific areas, research training, and researchmodules for independent work. Students are expected to carry out a successful programme of research within the duration of the programme. The internal structure of the programme is designed to be quite different from course intensive postgraduate programmes and allows for relative flexibility interms of student backgrounds and prior training

    IIT Bombay offers a two-year Master of Arts (M.A. ) programme in English, which is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of English language and literature. The programme aims to equip students with critical and analytical skills required to engage with literary texts from various genres and historical periods. The course structure of the M.A. programme in English at IIT Bombay is as follows: First Year: Semester I: Literary Theory and Criticism, British Literature from 14th to 18th century, American Literature, Indian Writing in English Semester II: British Literature from 19th century to Contemporary times, Literary Genres (Poetry, Drama, Novel), Commonwealth Literature, Language and Linguistics Second Year: Semester III: Optional Papers (choose from a range of electives), Indian Aesthetics, Literary and Cultural Studies Semester IV: Dissertation In the first year of the programme, students are introduced to the foundational concepts and theories of literature, along with the history of literature in Britain, America, and India.
