Effectiveness of Placement Cell for M.A. Courses at Jamia Millia Islamia

The effectiveness of the placement cell for M.A. courses at Jamia Millia Islamia is mixed. While some students reported positive experiences, others felt that the cell did not meet their expectations.

    * Limited Placements: One student mentioned that despite having a central placement cell, there were limited placements available in their department. Another student stated that they did not receive any placement offers.
    * No Placement Cell Support: Some students reported that they had to find jobs on their own without any assistance from the placement cell. One student mentioned that while the placement cell existed, it was not active in their department.
    * Opportunities Exist: Despite these limitations, some students found job opportunities outside of the placement cell's efforts. For example, one student landed an internship at a media agency through their own networking.

Average placement but Helpful faculty and good environment.
Placements: In Jamia Millia Islamia, Political Science department contains three courses: Political Science, Public Administration, and Human Rights and Duties Education. According to my academic year experience, there is no placement held in the last 2 years. Internships are provided as well.
Infrastructure: Yes, there's a departmental library provided to our department. Classes go on regularly scheduled, and as of now, there is no Wi-Fi system in our department. About hostels, the boys' hostel is much better than the girls'. There is a need for improvement in food and should add certain medical facilities in hostel, especially.
Faculty: The faculty of our department is so helpful, qualified, and well-trained. Professors give attention to every student and their concerns as well as give the best study material, which helps in examination. Also, they conduct sessions and seminars related to different topics. Semester exams are not that much difficult; it depends on students' regularity and concentration.
Other: This course is mostly based on individual rights, so I like about this course that it focuses on the rights of people like women, children, migrants, disabled people, and every human. Also, in this course, internships are provided related to different ministries.

Want to become a development extensionist.
Placements: From the batch that passed out in 2022, almost 60% of students were placed. Top recruiting companies were Bachpan Bachao Andolan, Kailash Satyarthi Children Foundation, and Etasha Society. Every student is placed by the department for fieldwork in the 2nd year in different NGOs.
Infrastructure: Basic facilities provided by the department are free Wi-Fi, an in-built library, a purified water facility, spacious classrooms, a garden, and corridors. Hostel is pretty good. Food available in the canteen is also nice. All students of Jamia get free medical services.
Faculty: Faculty members are very helpful, highly qualified, and knowledgeable. Teaching quality is good, and every concept is taught in a very simple, easy-to-understand language. Course curriculum is highly relevant to the development area and prepares students to be industry-ready. Semester exams are of moderate difficulty, with a pass percentage of 98%-100%.
Other: I chose this course because it provides on-ground fieldwork, allowing students to understand the real-life challenges of society. I received a position scholarship from Jamia Millia Islamia.

Best campus, bad infrastructure of Psychology department, and best faculties.
Placements: As I am a psychology student, placement in this course is not that active on my campus. But there is a placement cell with which we have affiliation. But the thing is, my seniors (the previous passed-out batch) have been admitted to different universities for M.Phil. and PhD.
Infrastructure: Hostel is good. There is good infrastructure and mess. But the Department of Psychology is bad. There are no separate class rooms for PG and UG. Programmes are conducted on corridors. There is free WiFi on campus. We have a vast library and large reading halls with air conditioning. We have many canteens where Veg and Non-Veg are available. We have fee consultation facilities at the hospital. We have a big sports complex where we can practice.
Faculty: Faculties are really helpful. But syllabus is not that updated. There are two sessions before every semester exams, and every exam was conducted on time. The semester exam is not that difficult for those who studied. At least two modules from every subject come in the exams.
Other: It was my dream to study in Jamia. By God's grace, I cracked the entrance exam and got admission. The campus is perfect, and the events here are entertaining. Only negative is the bad infrastructure of the psychology department. Also, the best thing about my course is the compulsory internship during the third semester; it was a really good experience and will make us capable of becoming good psychologists.

    Review of Jamia Millia Islamia.
Placements: Among our senior batches, that is, 2024 passouts, only one got campus placement. I am not sure about the packages offered for his post. But three seniors got appointed as research interns in good companies. The placement percentage was very low last year from M.A. Economics. This year we are expecting more placements because this year the department has a centralized placement cell for 2 PG courses and one graduate course. Our department has another course called M.Sc. Banking and Financial Analytics; it is a corporate-oriented course and last year almost all got placed in that course. In my batch, around six to seven people did placement during last summer vacation.
Infrastructure: In the department we have a library, a model classroom and a computer lab. Wi-Fi is available in both campus and hostel (in hostel the Wi-Fi connection for the upper three floors was done on last two weeks back). The hostel room is comfortable for me—three people in a room with a separate bed, study table, study lamps, curtains, mirrors, two fans and a pretty big shelf. During summer, we can buy and set coolers if we prefer that and we also need to pay an extra electricity charge for the same. Food was fine for the first year, but now I feel like eating the same foods, which didn't seem good at times. We had to eat read and utter for four days as breakfast and if we take lunch packs most of the days, Chapati and Subji will be there. It is difficult to eat dry chapati in the afternoon. To be honest, dinner will be nice. We get chicken four days and they try to change the recipes also, which makes us happy.
Faculty: Teachers are very helpful and qualified. They give us space to present our ideas, submit assignments, engage in different workshops, seminars, etc. They ask us to read a lot. Different articles and papers. We do group discussions in classes too. The course curriculum is relevant as they try to bring both the needs of corporate jobs and research jobs parallel in our syllabus. We have theory papers and labs where we learn software like R, Reviews, Spss, etc. At the same time, the quantitative part is also there in the syllabus. We have CBCS paper and optional paper too. The semester exams are not very difficult. For the first semester, it was too difficult for me. But gradually it becomes a bit easy compared to the first exam. The pass percentage I can say will be approximately 82%.
Other: The office work is pretty easy in the department because all the departments have their own office staff to deal with the paper work. The approachability of professors is high. The department conducts different events. Among them, the major events are the department sports meet, the department fest called "Ecocracy," and the alumni meet. Apart from this, we conducts Vigilance Awareness Week Observance, Foundation day celebrations, corporate lecture series, conferences, etc.

Highly supportive faculty members, hands-on experience in the NGO sector and a peaceful campus.
Placements: There are no placements for my course in JMI. But the students usually find some fellowships or jobs with the help of the department and some of the students are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. also. They also look for jobs in allied sectors such as public policy and sustainability.
Infrastructure: There are Wi-Fi and lab facilities in the department. However, the facilities in the lab and the course teaching method are obsolete. The hostel is so nice with a vibrant academic community and reading halls. The rooms are big, neat and tidy. The food is also better than PGs.
Faculty: The teachers were helpful, especially if you want to go to the research/NGO field. The course curriculum is relevant but the method of teaching does not comply with modern technologies. The teachers are still following the obsolete way of teaching, which is boring.
Other: The course is good if you want to get employed in an NGO or to get into a Ph.D. in similar disciplines.

Dissatisfied with infrastructure considering the fact that this is a central university.
Placements: This course offers roles like counselor, psychologist, teacher, and trainer. However, practical knowledge is crucial for success in these professions. While theoretical learning is provided, real-world skills like communication, empathy, and problem-solving are essential. A focus on internships, fieldwork, and hands-on practice is needed to bridge the gap between theory and practical application, ensuring students are well-prepared for these roles.
Infrastructure: A key issue is the lack of specific allotted classrooms for each year. We are sitting in lab classrooms with limited space and uncomfortable chairs. Additionally, there is no efficient cooling system, making it difficult to focus during extreme weather conditions.
Faculty: While some teachers are qualified and helpful, others fall short in delivering quality education. Additionally, the course syllabus is outdated, lacking relevance to current trends and practices in the field, which impacts the overall learning experience and skill development of students.
