Our university has great infrastructure and facilities but academic is dissatisfactory.
Placements: The intake of the course for M.Sc. in electronic media is 60. A bachelor's degree with a minimum of 55% of marks in any discipline from a recognised university under the 10+2+3 system can join the course by passing the entrance exam. About 25% of seats are reserved for Puducherry Union territory candidates for this course. There is an active placement cell working inside the department. But the placement is less in my batch. Some television channels, radio stations, advertising agencies, and digital marketing companies called for the placement drive. The internship is optional according to the curriculum. But majority of the students from my batch did internships in various media organisations. There are so many roles offered by the course such as director, cameraman, light technical, programme producer, designer, editor, RJ, sound audiographer, PRO, and many more.
Infrastructure: The department has one of the biggest double height TV studios in academic institutions in the country along with a shooting floor, a PCR with video mixer, audio mixer, VTR, lights, chroma keyer, teleprompter, etc. The students are trained on the role of the crew and the workflows involved in indoor and multi-camera production with HD cameras and a full PCR setup. Students also receive professional training on audio and video editing using the latest software. The department has completely centralised air-conditioning. All classes have projectors, sound system, and high-speed internet connectivity. The University Health Centre offers medical facilities round-the-clock to the students residing in the hostels. For the mobility of the students from hostels to departments, library, computer center, etc., a bus facility is provided within the campus. Wi-Fi connectivity is also provided to all the hostels to enable the students to have internet access. At present, Pondicherry University has twenty-one hostels on campus, of which, thirteen are for boys and eight for girls. Out of the thirteen boys' hostels, nine are for PG students and four for research scholars. Out of the eight girls' hostels, seven are for PG students and one is for research scholars. The hostel mess is run by experienced and qualified caterers. The mess offers meals at reasonable rates. The mess fee for girls and boys per day per head is Rs 65.
Faculty: The staple focus of the program is to nurture the creative skills of students in television production, visual design, graphic design, animation, audio, and video editing besides providing them a thorough understanding of web development and e-content development. Students also learn the principles and practices of journalism, media laws and ethics, digital convergence, etc. Primarily, the program aims to provide them with critical and latent skills to produce audio-visual content such as documentaries, short films, interactive documentaries, and immersive media content to name a few.
Other: The first three candidates who secure the highest percentage of marks in the PG admission entrance examination will be eligible for the award of a merit scholarship of Rs.2000, Rs.1500, and Rs.1000 per month respectively for the first semester. Scholarship is sanctioned on the basis of entrance examination marks. For the subsequent semesters, the merit scholarship at the same rate of Rs.2000, Rs.1500, and Rs.1000 per month shall be awarded to the first three candidates who secure the highest marks in the previous semester (SGPA). Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (MCM) is awarded to 20% of students in each PG degree program of the University. The scholarship is based both on the merit in each semester (SGPA) and the parental income of the student. The annual income of the parents should not exceed Rs.2,50,000/-. The amount of the scholarship is Rs.750 per month. For the 1st semester, the scholarship is sanctioned on the basis of entrance exam marks. Besides, for the award of a scholarship, the candidates should secure at least 70% attendance every month, and pass all papers registered for each semester. The Head of the Department concerned shall certify fulfillment of the above conditions.
