All about BCom at National PG College, Lucknow : Aishwarya Verma
Settling off class 12th Boards brings us to the most perplexing phase of our life. “What to pursue now? Which college should I take admission in? What field should I opt for graduation?” alongside a bunch of other such questions. However, if you dwell in the city of Nawabs – Lucknow, and are planning to take up your bachelor’s degree within the city, then this article is for you.
One of the most fervent questions is, ‘Which is the best college in Lucknow?’ While some students are well-informed of the prevailing ‘college scenario’ in the city, some, like me, are not; and so, either take to counselling or the typical Indian counselling - ‘relative advice’. So here’s my take on this glitch and I really hope it gets you to a settling future ahead.
Why I chose National PG College?
Apart from the fact that National P.G College has bagged pretty boasting ranks over the year, the college hours were what drove me here. Unlike other colleges, here, the studies are conducted only for 2.5 hours. There are 3 classes of 50 minutes each. Also, the library opens at 10:30 AM and closes at around 2:30 PM. On most of the weekdays, the library is crowd-free. Lastly, the library has all the required books and definitely, you won’t be required to purchase even a single book all throughout your bachelor’s. Above all, just 2.5 hours of college duration is the most enticing factor. This implies that you will be having more than ample time to attend your coaching classes and pursue other courses as well.
The most important- what about the entrance test for BCom?
The brochure that you receive along with the entrance form has the syllabus and the sample questions mentioned separately and in detail. However, here lies a great hitch; now being debunked. The syllabus mentions “Commerce”, “General Studies”, “English” and “Reasoning” as base for the BCom entrance test. Now, most of the students, study “Commerce” as a ‘school time’ separate subject and pay little or no heed to “Accounts”. After giving my entrance test, I realised that by saying commerce, the faculty means – “Accounts”. Because in my case and even in the 2017 entrance exam, there were 70% of accounting questions, so be thorough with the accounting ratios; because the practical part is included as well.
Any special attention to be given or any study material recommended?
As aforesaid, pay most of the heed to “Accounts”, because that is never mentioned in the brochure and also, no one will tell you such a thing. But honestly, the paper will comprise of practical and theoretical questions on accounting and accounting ratios especially. Study commerce and management a bit. For General Knowledge and Current Affairs, you can take help from online tests and the latest sample papers. There are certain books available, like the ones being sold right outside the campus (in yellow and red cover; sorry but I don’t remember the name), and yes, they are a good source too. However, they comprise of tons of questions and not everything mentioned there might be useful.
What rank did I score?
I secured 103 rank in my LUCMAT. This is the only course I applied for in National P.G College. It is necessary to secure a rank below 110 to enter the “regular” batch; unless any specific quote is being applied.
How about the discipline and placement prospects?
Being a Lucknowite, soon after finishing your school education, you will come to know that National P.G College owes a major part of its reputation to the disciplinary arena. From the class teachers to the higher faculty, discipline stands to be of major relevance. You will never even hear anyone uttering “ragging”; trust me, never. It doesn’t exist here.
Talking of placements, there are some good companies like HCL, British Telecom, Aon, Alite, HDFC Bank and so on, that visit the campus annually; resulting in healthy placements from the college. The starting packages are fairly decent. They may incept from 1.35 lacs per annum, and can even reach up to 7 lacs annually.
Any special hitch?
The college does not allow the students to carry mobile phone within the campus. If caught, the mobile phones are literally smashed on the ground till the screen shatters (if caught by P. K. Sir (HOD of Geography)) or confiscated along with the ID card. So, better leave your mobile in your scooty trunk or do not bring the mobile phone to the college, at all. Also, the college has a uniform code; however, after 12 PM, casual entries into the campus are permitted.
How is the overall faculty?
Honestly, just like any other college, it is a fusion of good and bad. While some teachers are extremely supportive and decently natured, some don’t even know how to talk properly. To sum up, focus more on the study part and you’ll be less bothered by their attitude.
Conclusively, the college has a nurturing and serene ambience. The canteen prepares fresh food with everyday upgrades to the menu, and the overall faculty is incredible. If at all you are planning to pursue CA, CLAT or any such side course, National P.G will be the best choice; because the teachers provide the notes and again, the college hours will all be in your favour. Happy graduation to you.
