Students’ Speak: Get your basics right to score well in placements
There were many ups and downs through my interview process, you may think that you have done well in the GD or interview but you may not get selected. You may go to other colleges and find that they are partial to their students. Never ever give up.
Before you begin with the placement drive, you should have certain things clear in your mind. Make sure you are:
- Precise about the kind of role you want.
- Selecting the company or companies that you want to get in and prepare for them.
- Not getting into a dilemma or any kind of fear if you are not selected immediately because great things happen if you wait.
Once you have cleared your mind, begin to implement these tips to make the best of placement drives:
- Be prepared in quants because any company can call up for an aptitude test.
- Take up mock aptitude tests and try to improve yourself in the weaker sections.
- Takedown notes for GD topics and have mock GD at your hostel rooms or if you have a group of friends.
- Know the current topics in GD and be prepared at both the pros and the cons of the topic.
- Have a look at the job role and try to find out what the company is expecting from the candidate.
- Read about the company for which you are going to attend an interview.
- Be well-versed in the basics of the course you have done in your PG or UG.
- Have you resume checked by an expert who is good at helping you build a resume.
- Have a proper format of the resume that is being approved by the institutions or the companies.
- Be prepared about each and everything you put up in your resume.
- Have decent English speaking skills. Most of them look at this, if you are good at speaking then you are halfway.
- Be sincere and truthful to yourself and the company you are going to attend.
My experience
Placements at my college started in July and there were many companies that offered the roles for sales. However, I am not good at sales, so I waited for a long time to get placed in a company.
There were many ups and downs through the process, you may think that you have done well in the GD or interview but you may not get selected. You may go to other colleges and find that they are partial to their students. Never ever give up.
The company I got placed in – the aptitude exam for the company was at 5 pm and the exam centre was 20 km away, and at 4 pm I was thinking whether to attend the exam or not. Luckily, I am working in that company now with a good role and salary.
Therefore, anything can happen. Do not rush into things. Slow and steady wins the race.
