5 popular engineering innovation awards for students
Recognition for work done is always accepted and that too with immense enthusiasm and we are sure engineering students feel the same way. After all, they spend years in research and put in a lot of hard work in developing useful projects and the least that people in authority can do is applaud them for their efforts.
So, some organisations and boards in India are working on these lines and are even making efforts to honour such innovative thought process of engineering students by presenting them with innovation awards.
As part of these awards the innovations and research work of students is appreciated and they are given a cash prize or scholarship along with getting acquainted with people/organizations which can help in the development as well as spreading a word about the projects developed by these bright minds.
Some of these innovation awards wherein students from institutes spread all over India can participate are listed below:
Knimbus Young Innovator Award
Months: February – March (annually)
Prize money: Rs. 25,000
More than 900 teams from more than 600 colleges spread all over India take part in this competition which is conducted by Knimbus. Winners are judged and shortlisted by a panel comprising of renowned faces from the industry and academia.
The winners of this innovation award are honoured with a scholarship cash prize and are also given the opportunity to showcase their work at more than 2000 institutes spread across the world. The awardees and their works are brought before the attention of industry experts and entrepreneurs who can help in developing the project and take its execution forward.

Gandhian Young Technological Award
Months: February- April
SRISTI (Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions) awards innovative student projects in field such as engineering, science, pharmacy as well as other applied technologies. Gandhian Young Technological Awards are national level awards which are given to student projects under the following categories:
- MLM ( More from less for Many)
- Sristi socially relevant technological innovation
- Strategic innovation and /or technological-edge
In 2014, these awards would be handed over by Dr RA Mashelkar, Chairperson, NIF at IIM-Ahmedabad. As part of these awards, the winning projects are displayed in an exhibition which is visited by leading policy makers and practitioners of the country. The prototype may be retained for display at a permanent exhibition likely to be developed at the national level with due acknowledgement of innovators, supervisors and the concerned institution.

Shri Balwant Award for Excellence and Innovation
Months: First week of March (annually)
Prize money: Rs. 21,000
This award is conducted to honour undergraduate engineering students for their innovative ideas. This award is conducted at the campus of Shri Balwant Institute of Technology (SBIT) at Sonepat. Students pursuing engineering & technology from any branch and that too from an institute recognized by AICTE, UGC, Board of Technical Education, IIT’s are eligible to participate. Maximum two students can submit one application.
The criteria on the basis of which candidates are presented this award are:
- Uniqueness of their innovation
- Financial viability
- Usability of the innovation for the common man.

PDMA India Innovation Contest
Months: September – March
Prize money: Rs 60, 000 (first prize), Rs 45, 000 (second prize) and Rs 30, 000 (third prize)
Students pursuing BE/BTech programmes in any branch of engineering and technology at approved institutions in the country are eligible to take part in this national level award competition. The projects developed by students should be such that they offer innovative solutions to any engineering problem which is of interest to the industry or R&D organizations. This competition is not open to students who develop just the application software without any reference to hardware integration.
Budding Engineering Innovation Award
As part of this innovation award for budding engineer, NASSCOM reaches out to some 1500 colleges in the country wherein students from these colleges can showcase their projects. Companies such as Robert Bosch Engineering services and Sony India software Centre Pvt Ltd are known to felicitate students at this initiative of NASSCOM.
