According to a statement, IIT-Kharagpur donated Rs 1 crore to the PM-CARES Fund to back the central government's endeavours in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. It had launched a campaign among its faculty and staff members to donate their one day's salary.

According to a statement, IIT-Kharagpur donated Rs 1 crore to the PM-CARES Fund to back the central government's endeavours in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. For making this contribution, the premier institute had launched a campaign among its faculty and staff members to donate their one day's salary. It further stated that the institute collected Rs 1 crore from the faculty, staff and other sources and transmitted the money to the Prime Ministers Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund. To establish a temporary fund, the institute has also been approached by some alumni from the US. This was done by IIT Kharagpur as an initiative to sustain and support the deprived people in and around the campus who have been economically impacted by the pandemic.

In the meantime, the tally of coronavirus pandemic has been soaring day in and day out across the globe. The number of coronavirus patients has increased to more than one million across the globe. Some of the most badly affected countries include the likes of Italy, the US, Spain, France, Russia among many others. As far as India is concerned, the number of infected patients has reached past the tally of 5,500. Apart from this, a total of 166 people have lost their lives. The country has been going through a three weeks nationwide lockdown. For the last many days, it is being speculated that the lockdown would be extended.

In the last ten days, the number of coronavirus patients has witnessed a dramatic rise. Since the numbers are expected to rise further in the coming days, the government has advised everyone to stay at home and follow the guidelines issued.
