The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has invited proposals from various governments, private institutes and private organsations, to make use of its supercomputer to do coronavirus research.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has asked the government, private educational institutions and private organisations in association with an academic partner from all over India to come forward with a proposal and use its supercomputer resource PADUM to do research on COVID-19.

As per this, the supercomputer will be given on merit-based proposals and will be made available for three months. The selected proposal will get total computational time worth Rs 1 crore for free. Each proposal will have a maximum cap of Rs 10 lakh worth of computational resources. After evaluating the performance, the institute will also allow extension of allocation period to six months.

All the researchers from the government, private institutions and private organisations will have to submit their proposals by April 15, 2020.

"During these tough times, it is important to share resources that are available, to cater to the infrastructure requirements of the researchers who are working on the coronavirus pandemic," said Professor V Ramgopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi.

"IIT Delhi has taken a step for this and wish to set an example. At the given situation, it is important for scientists to collaborate with each other in order to combat COVID-19," he added.

Once the researchers will submit their proposals, a team of experts from IIT Delhi will evaluate it on a first come first serve basis.

After the completion of the selection process of the proposals, the institute will provide basic and limited support to them, which will include instructions on job submissions or the smooth functioning of these projects, Prof. Rao said.
