IIT Kharagpur to train Indian engineers, scientists in high-performance computing & AI
Under the National Supercomputing Mission of the Government of India, the project aims to bridge the gap between application and development aspects in high-performance computing.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has collaborated with the Department of Science and Technology and C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing), to train Indian engineers and scientists on high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.
The collaboration has taken place under the project titled βNSM Nodal Centre for training in HPC and AI,β where the centre will focus on manpower creation and upskilling of students, faculty, scientists, researchers, engineers in large scale computing across different scientific domains. Under the National Supercomputing Mission of the Government of India, the project aims to bridge the gap between application and development aspects in high-performance computing.
In the first phase of the training, some of the key topics covered are fundamental areas like basics of parallel computing; MPI, OpenMP and CUDA programming; scientific computing; HPC-AI convergence and application areas like multi-scale modelling, computational biology, computational fluid dynamics etc.
While talking about the project, Professor Somnath Roy, principal investigator of the project at IIT Kharagpur stated that the recent developments in computational techniques in science and engineering had been strongly linked with the efficient utilisation of high-performance computing resources. Therefore, he believes that it is essential to impart HPC training to the researchers working in the application domain.
He further stated that it is also vital that engineers and developers working on high-performance computing understand the requirement posed by the domain experts. βWe have already conducted an online training program on the basics of HPC along with other nodal centres of CDAC which attracted around 800 students from diverse backgrounds,β said Prof Roy.
Currently, IIT Kharagpur hosts a 1.3 Petaflop supercomputer named Paramshakti delivered and commissioned through NSM. The institute has even set up the Center for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS) funded by Dept. of Science and Technology to carry out next-generation interdisciplinary research and teaching activities that involve this state-of-the-art HPC platform.
