Preparing in the last month is crucial for every student. Focus on timely preparation and thorough revision of each subject to secure high scores in the exam.

Students preparing for JEE Main should start their preparation from day one and keep the last month for revision of the syllabus. One can get a good score in JEE Main or any other competitive entrance examination such as JEE Main by properly organising their study plan for the last month.

Importance of study material:

While JEE Main preparation, students can get materials from various sources to prepare for their exam. However, it is important for every student to know the right study material to clarify their basics. The study materials for each subject is given below:

Physics:

  • Concepts of Physics by C. Verma
  • Understanding Physics by DC Pandey
  • Practice Book Physics for JEE by DC Pandey
  • Problems in General Physics by E. Irodov

Mathematics:

  • Cengage Maths by G Tiwani
  • Comprehensive Mathematics for JEE by Tata McGraw-Hill Publications
  • Arihant Problem Book in Mathematics for IIT JEE by SK Goyal

Chemistry:

  • Problems in Physical Chemistry for JEE by Narendra Awasthi
  • Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd for Organic Chemistry
  • Concise Inorganic Chemistry by D. Lee for Inorganic Chemistry

Knowledge of the examination structure:

I appeared for JEE Main examination in 2016. According to the examination pattern of 2016, JEE Main had two papers.

Paper-1 for admissions into Engineering (BE/BTech) courses whereas Paper-2 is for admissions into Architecture and Planning (BArch and BPlan) courses.

  • Paper-1 consists of three parts with 3 subjects (Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry) of 30 questions each. All questions are of multiple choice type questions. Four marks are given for each correct answer and one mark would be deducted for each wrong answer. So, the total marks for Paper-1 would be 360.
  • Paper-2 comprises of objective questions for both Maths and Aptitude, numerical questions for Maths and questions for Drawing section.

For JEE Main 2020, NTA (National Testing Agency) has announced some changes in the exam pattern. It would include another paper for BPlanning.

According to the changes in JEE Main exam pattern 2020

JEE Main has three papers. Paper-1 for BE/BTech, Paper-2 for BArch and Paper-3 for B. Planning.

Paper-1:

It is conducted in online mode includes questions from Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry with 25 questions (20 MCQs and 5 Numerical Type) from each subject carrying equal weightage. For each correct answer four marks would be awarded, however, 1 mark would be deducted for each incorrect answer. No negative marking for numerical type questions. The time duration would be 3 hours. Total marks for Paper-1 would be 300.

Paper-2:

The mode of the exam would be partly (Mathematics and Aptitude) online and partly offline for Drawing test. It would include 25 questions (20 MCQs+5 numerical type questions) in Mathematics. 50 questions in Aptitude with an equal weightage of 4 marks, 2 questions in Drawing would carry 100 marks. One negative mark would be given for each incorrect answer in MCQs. No negative marking for numerical type and drawing. The total duration would be 3 hours. Total marks would be 400.

Paper-3:

This paper is conducted in online mode with 25 questions in Mathematics, 50 questions in Aptitude, 25 questions in the Planning Section, each carries an equal weightage of four marks. All questions are of objective type. One negative mark would be given for incorrect every answer. The time duration would be 3 hours. Total marks would be 400.

Highest scoring topics in JEE Main

The subject-wise scoring topics of JEE Main are as follows:

Mathematics:

  • Algebra (Quadratic Equations), Trigonometry, Analytical geometry, Differential Calculus (Limits-L-Hospital’s Rule), Integral Calculus, Vectors, Matrix & Determinants, Probability.

Physics:

  • Gravitation, Electrostatics, Electromagnetic Induction, Work Power and Energy, Dimensional analysis, Heat Transfer, Optics, Waves and Sound.

Chemistry:

  • Periodic Table, Transition Elements and Coordination Geometry, Thermodynamics and Gaseous State, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Equilibrium, Solid State and Surface Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry, Mole Concept, Redox Reaction, Electrochemistry, Chemical kinetics, Solutions, General Organic Chemistry, Stereochemistry, Hydrocarbon, Alkyl Halides, Carboxylic Acids and their Derivatives, Carbohydrates, Amino Acids and Polymers, Aromatic Compounds.

Plan for revision:

Revision is the last and the most important stage for preparation. Revision is crucial to get good results and boost the confidence level. Unlike every year, this year due to effect the second session of JEE Main has been postponed. Due to Covid-19, all the students preparing for JEE Main 2020 got more time to revise each topic.

Evaluate own performance

Self-evaluation is always a good practice for any competitive exam aspirant. Practising previous year question papers and attempting mock tests would help the student to assess their performance.
