Progressive move

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU) in Aurangabad is one of the few universities in India to have installed sanitary pad vending machines in its campus. This progressive move is being welcomed by the students for not only doing its bit to break the social taboo surrounding menstrual cycle but also make life for women students easier on the university campus.

Along with the sanitary napkin vending machines, independent disposing machines have also been installed to easy disposal of used pads.

These machines will be most useful for women students living in on campus hostels as they are not allowed to go out after stipulated time. In case of emergency, sanitary napkins will be readily available within the campus at any given point in time.

Suhas Morale, director of students’ welfare at BAMU told a leading daily that they decided to install the vending and disposing machines considering presence of huge number of female students on the campus. The campus houses about 799 women students in seven hostels.

We arranged funds for sanitary napkin vending and disposing machines from the 12th plan of the University Grants Commission (UGC)," he said adding that BAMU was the first state university to install sanitary napkins vending and disposing machines.

According to reports, each vending machine costed Rs 21,500, while disposing machines were purchased for Rs 20,500 each.

There are plans to install sanitary pad vending machines at every department too.
