How to write a perfect Essay for XAT?

3 mins readUpdated on Mar 6, 2017 16:34 IST

Scoring in XAT is chiefly limited to answering multiple choice questions. However, the exam also has a subjective part – essay writing – which is to be attempted in 20 minutes.

Essay writing is a crucial part of XAT exam which allows the examiner to test the creativity, thought process and written communication skills. Aspirants are judged on their multidimensional capabilities with the essay writing. The initial shortlisting process and calculation of percentile includes marks secured in essay writing. It is also an important part in GE/PI rounds.

Therefore, it is not only important for XAT aspirants to prepare for Quant, Verbal Ability and decision making, but also devote time to essay writing. Read few preparation tips for XAT.

Candidates must keep few things in mind while they write an essay for XAT. Here’s the list of points that will help you write a perfect essay for XAT:

1. Set a format for essay

The first thing that the examiner notices is the overall appearance of the essay. Write the essay in paragraphs. A basic essay must have at least three to four paragraphs, depending upon the word limit and the sub-headers. Do not forget to give a title to your essay.

Apart from the appearance you have to keep in mind the writing format. Start your essay with a creative approach that must attract the reader’s attention. Each paragraph must be based upon a definite theory or idea. The most acceptable format of an essay is one where you start with an introduction about the topic. Then move on to arguments for and against in the next paragraphs. End your essay with a conclusion which must include the wrapping-up sentences. Or you may end it with a solution or even a question.

2. Express more in less words

Stay calm and composed while writing. Let the ideas flow into your mind first. Do not write what you are thinking. Spoken English and written English are different. Remember, you are penning down words on a paper. Be concise and clear about what you are writing. Writing long sentences may bore the examiner. Expressing your thoughts in a complex way will make it difficult for the reader to understand your point of view. Make use of a simple and easy to understand language. Try to be short and crisp. Do not repeat things while writing.

3. Do not stuff your essay with vocabulary

If you think using big and heavy words will help you gain more marks, then you are wrong. A use of good vocabulary is indeed impressive but stuffing too much dictionary language in an essay might adversely affect your score. Use a particular wors only if you are sure of it's relevance in the sentence. Otherwise, stick to simple and correct English.

4. Do not deviate from the topic

At times, one tends to drift while writing, but an entrance exam is no place to let your thoughts flow limitless. Stick to the topic of your essay. It is important for you to keep reminding yourself of the topic you are writing. So that you do not deviate from the subject. Your writing must express the answer to the question asked. Rather than just an essay which began on the subject but ended with some other issue.

5. Try to use relevant examples or facts

Try to make your essay attractive with relevant or live examples. You can also use facts, proverbs, quotations, or some catchy words or phrases. This will allow your reader to stick to your piece.

6. Keep a check on spellings and grammar

Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors can leave a bad impact on the examiner. It may often annoy the examiner. Take your time but write correct language. Keep checking for spelling or grammatical mistakes. Proof read your essay before a final submission.
