MAT cut offs are fixed by participating institutes individually and vary from each other. The MAT cut off percentiles for MBA/PGDM admission at top colleges are usually between 80-95 percentile. The cut offs are used to shortlist candidates for the selection round which included Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). Many good private B-Schools have MAT cut offs in the range of 70-80 percentile. MAT 2024 cut off for the participating colleges will be in the same range.

While some colleges consider the overall MAT exam score for shortlisting candidates for GD and PI, a few colleges also consider MAT composite score and MAT sectional scores of the candidate. Read below all about MAT cut off and MAT percentile.

Q:   Who decides MAT cut off percentiles for admission?

A:
The participating colleges decide MAT cut off for admission to their MBA/PGDM programmes. Generally, the top MBA colleges' cut off range is around 90-95 percentile. Cut offs of Tier 2 colleges is usually between the range of 80-90 percentile and for Tier 3 it is 50-70 percentile. These cut offs are determined by the colleges on the basis of certain parameters and may change year on year. The three main factors that determine MAT cut off are listed below: 1. Difficulty level of MAT exam 2. Total number of students applying 3. Seat intake capacity of any institute 4. Previous year's cut offs Admission to MBA/PGDM courses through MAT is based on the cut offs. This is the standard procedure for MBA Admission in private B-schools and top government institutes as well. MAT being a national level MBA entrance exam follows the same process.
Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   Is the selection process of all the MAT participating colleges same?

A:
Most of the MBA colleges follow the same selection process, I. e. exam score, Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). Some colleges conduct written Ability Test (What) as well. The GD conducted group wise Each group has 8-10 aspirants who are given a topic to discuss. About 5-10 minutes are given to aspirants for preparing their argument and then the floor is thrown open for discussion. In a group discussion, the panelists adjudge the candidates ability to hold a discussion, lead a discussion and convince a group of people. In the What, candidates are given a topic to write short essay. The essay is usually of 200-300 words. Through What, the panelists check candidate's knowledge, clarity of thoughts and communication ability. In the PI round, candidates are adjudged upon their interpersonal skills, communication ability and overall personality. However, there may be slight difference in cut offs or weightage assigned to various selection criteria of the colleges. Candidates must check the admission process of each institute of their preference on their official website or call on help desk.

Q:   What are the parameters on which MAT participating college shortlist candidates?

A:
MAT participating colleges shortlist candidates on the basis of their past academic record, MAT score and performance in What/GD-PI. Some colleges also consider prior work experience in full time mode at executive or managerial level. In many institutes the scores of Class 12 is given a lot of importance, while in some colleges the score of MAT is considered the most important. Candidates must note that it is critical to have a good profile overall. An important point that MAT aspirants must know is that even though there is no minimum eligibility criteria of 50 percent for appearing in MAT the participating colleges have the minimum score criteria for full-time MBA Admission. Candidates should have scored a minimum of 50 percent in graduation (45 percent for SC/ST/PwD candidates), to be eligible for getting shortlisted for admission through MAT score. So, they should ensure they have at least the minimum score required in graduation before applying for MAT.

MAT Cut Off Determining Factors

MAT 2024 cut off percentiles for all the three exam modes - CBT, PBT and IBT are same. There is no variation in MAT cut offs due to the exam mode. It means a candidate having 95 percentile in IBT and a candidate having 95 percentile in IBT both are eligible for admission. Also, if a candidate has attempted the MAT exam more than once, he/she can use the best score of all his/her attempts for admission.

MAT cut off for MBA admission depends on numerous factors. The three main factors are listed below:

  1. Range of MAT percentile scored by total number of test takers
  2. Difficulty level of the MAT question paper
  3. Total number of seats available in the institute
  4. Previous years' MAT cut off trends

Q:   For how long is MAT score valid?

A:

MAT score is valid for admission for the same academic year in which the candidate has taken the exam. For example, MAT 2024 score will be valid for admission for 2024-2026 MBA batch only. If a candidate wishes to drop a year after taking the MAT exam, then they will have to appear for the exam once again next year. They should however check the eligibility or selection criteria to have a clarity of MAT score of which session/phase is valid for admission in which academic year. For example, for 2025 academic session MAT September 2024 and MAT December 2024 scores will be valid for admission to some MBA colleges who have the admission cycle of January-February. Whereas, colleges who conduct admission in March-May accept MAT February exam scores for admission. To simplify, MAT test takers must not try to use their score for admission more than one year after appearing for it. They should appear for it again and use the latest score for admission.

Q:   Does AIMA conduct a counselling process for MBA Admission through MAT?

A:
No. AIMA does not hold common counselling process for MBA Admission through MAT. The role of AIMA is to only conduct the MAT exam and prepare the results. There role in MBA process is only sharing the result/scorecard of candidates with the MAT participating institutes that they have selected in the MAT application form. The participating institutes prepare their own merit list and select candidates for admission basis the result shared by AIMA. The minimum eligibility criteria for shortlisting is passing marks in MAT. However, the selection is based on cut offs fixed by the institutes. The MBA institutes accepting MAT scores inform students about their shortlist status via e-mail when the admission window opens. Candidates who are expecting a call from the institutes they had selected in the MAT application form must keep a check on their email (spam section too) for the interview invitation.
Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   What role does AIMA play in deciding the MAT percentile or MAT cut off?

A:
AIMA does not play any role in deciding MAT cut offs for admission to any institute. The cut offs are determined by MAT participating colleges individually. AIMA only calculates MAT percentile of every candidate basis their raw score. Factors such as total number of candidates appearing for the exam, the difficulty level of the exam and total number of seats collectively determine MAT cut off for a particular academic session. The cut offs rarely increase or decrease in an academic session. Composite Score of 400 and above is considered a good MAT score. Some of the MAT participating institutes take into consideration sectional cut offs along with overall cut off, while some institutes consider only the overall MAT score for admission. Only meeting the MAT cut off does not guarantee admission to the institute. Final admission is granted based on candidate's overall performance in the MAT exam, Group Discussion, Personal Interview and Academics. Candidates need to check the selection criteria of their preferred institute for the types of cut offs they accept for admission.
