Q:   What is MBBS NeXT all about?

A:

On December 28, 2022, NMC announced the guidelines for the National Exit Test  (NExT), including information on eligibility, exam structure, and scoring system. The NMC NExT exam, a single-window exit test for MBBS students seeking a licence to practise Medicine in India, will most likely be administered by AIIMS Delhi. The test will be broken into two sections to assess students' knowledge of theory as well as practical. Once implemented, the NExT exam will replace the FMGE and NEET PG exams, which are now used to register foreign medical graduates to practise medicine in India.

NExT tests will be held twice a year, in May and November. On June 27, the National Medical Commission (NMC) said that the National Exit Test would be delivered in two stages using computer technology: the written portion and the practical portion. Candidates must pass Step 1 and complete an internship to be eligible for Step 2.

According to the NMC's drafting criteria, the National Exit Test was designed to bring consistency to the summative evaluation across the country in terms of the minimal common levels of education and training for a medical graduate.

A:

No, an MBBS course cannot be completed in India within 3 years. The MBBS programme is offered to be quite comprehensive, whereby studying for the courses in leading schools in India takes 5.5 years, covering the academic and clinical aspects.
The duration of the MBBS course is prescribed by concerned regulatory bodies and medical councils in India to ensure adequate education and clinical training for making a student a qualified doctor.
It is neither feasible nor advisable to complete an MBBS course in less time than the prescribed duration on the ground while compromising the quality and depth of education and clinical experience required for medical practice.
