Each level of the CFA exam has its own criteria and passing score. CFA institute sets a MPS which changes with each cycle for the newly registered candidates. Some years test takers will receive an overall CFA score of 65% and fail, and in some years they may receive a score of 62% and pass. The scoring plays a role in deciding the overall pass score in the CFA exam. In general, an overall score of 70% and above will help you pass the CFA exam.

The thick black dotted line represents the 10th percentile score which means 10% of the students who appeared for the exam scored less than this on the exam. 

The purple dashed line represents the 90th percentile score which means 10% of the aspirants who appeared for the exam scored higher than this in the CFA exam.

The light blue box around the score of the students represents a 90% confidence interval. A student who has scored well could have a high confidence interval that he/she would have passed under nearly any circumstances and will have the grey line with the confidence interval box above the MPS. 

The bold grey line represents the score obtained by the aspirants in the CFA exam Level 1 2023. If the thick grey line lies above the MPS line (minimum passing score line), it means the candidate has passed the exam but if it lies below the MPS then it means he/she has faltered. 

A minimum passing score (MPS) is set by the CFA Institute Board of Governors, after every CFA exam for each level. The purpose of this approach is to ensure fairness to students across administrations as the difficulty of each exam is taken into account when setting the MPS. CFA does not release the MPS or individual aspirant scores online.
