Ministry of Education (MoE), on August 23 announced that State and National Boards will conduct Class 10, 12 board exams twice a year from the academic session 2024. Students will be allowed to retain the best score. Along with this, the Ministry also announced some major changes in the education system. In accordance with the New Education Policy (NEP 2020), the curriculum as per the New Curriculum Framework is ready and the textbooks will soon be developed for the academic session 2024.

It also shared that students of Class 11 and 12 need to study two languages, and at least one of them must be Indian language. The choice of subjects in classes 11 and 12 will not be restricted to streams such as arts, science, and commerce to give students flexibility to choose among different subjects.

The decision to conduct board exams twice a year is taken to make it easier for students. In order to make the board exams "easier" than the current "high stakes" practice, the examination will assess the understanding and achievement of competencies rather than months of coaching and memorizing.

According to the Ministry, “School boards are to develop capacities to offer 'on demand' exams in due course of time. Besides board exam test developers and evaluators, they will have to go through university-certified courses before taking up this work.” The new framework also states that the current practice of 'covering' textbooks in the classroom will be avoided, while stressing that the cost of textbooks should be optimised.

After the announcement of these major changes in the education session 2024 by the Government, National and State Boards are yet to release any official notification for their students. Thus, 'CBSE board exams twice a year' is not yet confirmed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

With these major announcements by the Ministry of Education, State and National Boards are yet to release official notifications regarding the changes being introduced for the students of the ongoing academic session.

    What is NEP 5+3+3+4 Structure?

The significant amendment in the NEP 2023 is the replacement of the 10+2 structure with the 5+3+3+4 structure. The 10+2 has been prevalent in our education system for a very long time. So, a complete change in that system can be confusing for the students. In the new Pedagogical and Circular Structure, the government has subdivided the schooling of students into four parts. These four parts are Secondary, Middle, Preparatory, and Foundational. These four stages of schooling will be crucial parts of educational development in students’ school lives.
