Govt asks IITs, IIMs, Central Universities to fill up vacant teaching posts in one year

Out of 39,822 sanctioned teaching posts in centrally funded institutions that include IITs, NITs, CUs, IIMs, IIITs, IISERs, etc. nearly 36 percent, which is 14,372 are lying vacant.

The Ministry of Education has asked the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Central Universities, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other centrally funded institutions to fill up all the vacant teaching posts on mission mode in a year.

Higher education secretary Amit Khare in his letter to heads of institutions has asked them to fill these vacancies in a mission mode within a period of one year starting from September 5, 2021, to September 4, 2022.
These institutions have been asked to especially fill up Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and EWS category seats on time.
The decision was taken following a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on the Welfare of the SCs and STs held yesterday in Parliament House with the Department of Higher education, University Grants Commission (UGC) in the issue of implementation of reservation in 23 IITs in India.

As per education ministry data, out of 39,822 sanctioned teaching posts in centrally funded institutions that include IITs, NITs, CUs, IIMs, IIITs, IISERs, etc. nearly 36 percent, which is 14,372 are vacant.

6000 posts vacant in CUs, DU has 846 vacancies

In central universities alone as many as 6136 posts are lying vacant of which 1460 posts are of professors, 2358 associate professors and 2318 assistant professor posts are lying vacant.

Delhi University has one of the highest number of faculty posts lying vacant, which is around 850. The maximum number of posts that are lying vacant in the university is that of Associate Professors (432), followed by Assistant Professors (242) and 170 of Professors.

Delhi University (DU) Vice-Chancellor speaking to Shiksha recently said that the university will clear the backlog of vacant faculty positions soon. “The Delhi University has around 840 faculty posts lying vacant and they can be filled if we go on a fast-track mode,” said DU VC, P.C. Joshi.

As per the letter sent by the ministry to all the Central Higher Education Institutions (CHEls) functioning under the administrative control of the ministry, it has been decided that all CHEls should fill these vacancies in a mission mode within a period of one year and to report about the action taken and progress made.

“All CHEls are requested to strictly comply with the above instructions and to undertake a special drive to fill backlog vacancies in their institutions on Mission Mode,” reads the letter.

The UGC has also been asking institutions to fill up the vacant teaching posts from time to time, it also prepared Guidelines for Recruitment of Faculty on June 4, 2019, for Universities, Colleges and Institutions Deemed to be Universities outlining the selection procedure and the time frame for recruitment which has been circulated to all Universities to adhere to the guidelines.
