IIT Delhi forms joint committee to look into hostel fee hike
The committee will work on finding ways of reducing the mess fee. It will also do a comparative study of similar messes in other large metros.
The administration of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi today held a meeting with students concerned to look into some mess fee-related concerns expressed by them. In the meeting, it was decided to form a joint committee of representatives of students concerned and the administration.
As per a statement issued by IIT Delhi, the joint committee will work on finding ways towards reducing the mess fee. The committee will also do a comparative study of similar messes in other large metros. It is important to note that messes in various hostels at IIT Delhi are run by students through their elected representatives, who also have transparent access to the mess accounts.
IIT Delhi students today protested against the fee hike in hostel and mess charges. The students have claimed that the average mess fee has been increased to approximately INR 7,000 per month, which is higher than other IITs.
The agitating students have also claimed that they pay INR 80-90 every day for the salaries and pensions of Board of Hotel Management (BHM) workers. BHM handles the salaries of hostel mess workers and it is drawn from the fees paid by the students. They said they also met the Dean of Student Affairs but to no avail. So, they started a protest against the administration today (April 10) in IIT Delhi.
