IIT Delhi Hosts Workshop on Transformative Leadership in STEMM for SC/ST PhD Scholars

IIT Delhi organized a three-day "Transformative Leadership in STEMM (TLS) Workshop" aimed at empowering SC/ST community PhD scholars in their second year or beyond from IITs, NITs, and other HEIs to pursue faculty roles in these institutes. Get details here 

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi conducted a three-day "Transformative Leadership in STEMM (TLS) Workshop" specifically for SC/ST community PhD scholars in their second year or later of PhD studies at IITs, NITs, and other Higher Education Institutes (HEIs). The workshop's primary goal was to inspire and enable these scholars to pursue faculty positions within IITs, NITs, and similar institutions.

A scientific committee chaired by Prof. Narayanan Kurur (Dean of Academics, IIT Delhi) selected a cohort of 30 students belonging to the SC/ST community in the fields of Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering from various institutions across the country. 

Throughout the workshop, participants showcased their research and conducted teaching demonstrations, receiving guidance and feedback from faculty members. Additionally, they took part in a group activity focused on incubation, orchestrated by the Technology Innovation Hub of IIT Delhi (IHFC), spanning three days. 

The workshop also included numerous sessions aimed at developing skills specific to the faculty application process. “This initiative has the potential to enhance the confidence of PhD scholars and equip them with the tools to emerge as future leaders in their respective fields,” said Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, of IIT Delhi.

In the workshop's open discussions, participants delved into various subjects such as the impact of community involvement, addressing health disparities, overcoming obstacles in creating a dynamic faculty profile, nuances of proposal writing, commercializing innovations, mastering the English language, and overcoming fears related to self-presentation.

The workshop's convenor, Prof. Yashpal Jogdand (Humanities and Social Sciences Department and Faculty Advisor, Initiative for Caste Equity, ODI, IIT Delhi), and co-convenor, Prof. Pravin Ingole (Department of Chemistry and Chairperson, SC/ST Cell, IIT Delhi), expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support for this initiative from the Institute and especially from the faculty from the departments of Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering.
