IIT Delhi Mourns Loss of MTech Student Found Hanging in Hostel Room

Tragic Incident at IIT Delhi: A 24-year-old student pursuing his M.Tech at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi was found hanging in his hostel room, according to police reports on Friday. The distressing situation unfolded when Sanjay Nerkar, became unreachable by phone, prompting his family to contact his hostel peers to inquire about his wellbeing.
Acting on the family's concerns, his friends found his room locked from the inside. Further, they found his body, which was hanging from the ceiling fan. The police have taken custody of this mortal remains.
In an email to students, Dean Student Affair said: “With a very heavy heart, it is our unfortunate duty to inform you of the tragic and untimely demise of our M Tech student Varad Sanjay Nerkar (2022MSP2521), a resident of Dronagiri hostel.”
As per reports, the email also stated that “found hanging in his room, which was locked from inside”. Police officials have taken the student’s body into custody. The mail further added that the student is from Nashik, Maharashtra. “His family is expected to arrive from Nashik today (February 16),” it stated.
Suicide Cases at IITs
This is the first student death at IIT Delhi this year, yet three student deaths have already been reported, notably two from Dalit communities. In a distressing trend, IIT Kanpur reported two suicides last month, citing academic pressure as a contributing factor. Besides, IIT Roorkee also tragically reported a student suicide on February 13, 2024.
