IIT Delhi Reschedules Mid-Semester Exams Following MTech Student's Suicide

The mid-semester exams at IIT Delhi have been deferred after the tragic suicide of an MTech student. Additionally, the institute has announced that there will be no scheduling of classes or laboratory sessions for the current week. Get details here

IIT Delhi Reschedules Mid-Semester Exams

IIT Delhi Mid-Sem Exams: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has rescheduled the mid-semester exams initially set for February 21 to 24, due to the effects of the recent suicide of MTech student Varad Sanjay Nerkar on fellow students. As per the revised schedule, IIT Delhi mid-sem exam will not be conducted from February 26 to 29, 2024.

The institute also announced that there would be no scheduled classes or laboratory sessions for this week. Students approached the college administration, saying there is a disturbing atmosphere on the campus at present, and most of them are not able to concentrate on their studies. This decision came after a meeting with student representatives earlier today.  

Postponement of IIT Delhi Mid-Sem Exam 2024

As per IE reports, an email from the college authority to students on Tuesday read: “Dear fellow IITians, Varad Sanajay Nerkar’s suicide has left all of us in deep anguish. This trauma has particularly affected students preparing for their mid-semester exams… So, after discussions with all the student representatives and with their consensus today, the mid-semester exams scheduled from Wednesday (February 21) to Saturday have been rescheduled to Monday (February 26) to Thursday. No classes or labs should be planned for the rest of this week.”

IIT Delhi MTech Student Suicide Case 

Following a condolence gathering at IIT Delhi on February 19, 2024, student representatives surrounded the director, calling for measures such as an open house and an inquiry committee. After hearing the students' demands, the director prompted the dean to notify the students about an upcoming open house through email. Consequently, an open house is scheduled for February 22 at 5 pm in the OAT.

Earlier, a second-year MTech student of IIT Delhi was found dead in Dronagiri hostel on the night of February 15. According to his LinkedIn profile, he was studying polymer science and technology from 2022. Varad Sanjay Nerkar was a native of Maharashtra’s Nashik.
