IIT Guwahati Sets New Standards in Nanotechnology with SWASTHA Initiative

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati recently inaugurated two state-of-the-art ISO clean rooms and a Centre of Excellence dedicated to the Smart Wearable Advanced Nanosensing Technologies in Healthcare ASICs (SWASTHA) project. The facilities were officially inaugurated by S Krishnan, the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), at the IIT Guwahati's Centre for Nanotechnology.

Supported by MeitY, the Centre of Excellence for SWASTHA is set to pioneer the development of sophisticated nanoelectronic devices with therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities for use in the healthcare sector. The initiative is committed to creating high-quality micro and nano electronics and nanomaterials products and prototypes, with an emphasis on applications in healthcare and energy.

IIT Guwahati Clean Room Facilities

The ISO 5 and 6 clean room facilities have been established to foster training and awareness in the fields of micro and nano electronic fabrication. They aim to bolster industrial research and development while contributing to the Indian Nanoelectronics Users Programme (INUP).

These facilities provide a meticulously controlled environment essential for the fabrication of nanoelectronics and nanomaterials, semiconductor devices, and the advancement of quantum technologies. This infrastructure is designed to support both fundamental and applied research.

These rooms will have the state-of-the-art equipment for device fabrication and development, including electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching, this enables the development of devices such as organic light-emitting diode (OLED), organic and hybrid photovoltaic devices, field-effect transistor (FET), surface acoustic wave (SAW), and microfluidic-based sensors.

The project and facilities are geared towards high Technology Readiness Level (TRL) Deep-Tech invention and innovation, start-up support, entrepreneurship development, long-term sustainability, capacity building, revenue generation, and collaboration with experts in India and abroad for both academia and industry professionals.
