IIT Hyderabad suicide: Family seeks probe, denies financial crunch

In the latest development in the suicide case of an IIT Hyderabad student, the family has asked the police to conduct a thorough probe into her death as they refused to believe that financial problems had driven her to suicide.

As per the TOI report, a case of suspicious death under Section 174 of the CrPC was registered.

The parents of Mamita Naik said that she was not the kind of person to resort to suicide. She had landed in Hyderabad just a fortnight ago on July 16 to join the institute in Sangareddy's Kandi.

Her uncle said that she sounded "normal, happy" in her last call with family adding, "there was no sign of depression," as per the report of In Shorts.

According to Sangareddy (Rural) sub-inspector of police M Rajesh Naik, the 21-year-old – a resident of Odisha -- was a first-year master’s student in the field of civil engineering and had joined the institute in July. She was staying in a single-seater room in the college hostel. “The other students found her hanging from the ceiling fan around 10 pm and one of them alerted the police... We found a suicide note in her room in which the student has written two lines in Odiya language saying that no one is responsible for her death... and that she was undergoing severe mental pressure,” SI Naik said, as reported by Hindustan Times.

On July 17, a second-year BTech student at IIT Hyderabad went missing from the campus. Three days later, his body was found washed ashore on a beach in Visakhapatnam. Also, last year, an MTech student died by suicide in his hostel room on the IIT Hyderabad campus.
