IIT Patna holds meet to condole PhD scholar’s death

Dewanand Pandit, a fourth-year PhD student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, passed away on October 15, 2022. He obtained his MTech degree in Nanoscience and Technology from IIT Patna.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna organised a meeting to offer condolences over the untimely demise of a PhD scholar. The institute issued a statement which said Dewanand Pandit, a fourth-year PhD student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, passed away on October 15, 2022.  

It said a condolence meeting was organised at the institute in the presence of IIT Patna Director. Dewanand Pandit joined PhD programme at the institute in 2019 under the supervision of Murshid Imam. He was one of the highly ambitious and exceptionally outperforming PhD students. He obtained his MTech degree in Nanoscience and Technology from IIT Patna. The institute stated, “Prof TN Singh, Director, IIT Patna, expressed his deep regret on the sad demise of Devanand Pandit whose untimely death is an irreparable loss for IIT Patna community and we pray that his soul finds peace.” 

IIT Patna sees 74% increase in PPOs 

The institute has seen a tremendous growth of 74 per cent in terms of number of pre-placement offers (PPOs) as compared to 2021-2022 batch and about 16.70 per cent growth in terms of average pay packages. 

An average offer of about INR 24 lakh was received last year, while this year the average offer has increased to INR 28.50 lakh. Multinational companies provide pre placement offers to the students on the basis of summer internship. In today's changing environment, as the internship-based hiring model is growing, the focus of the institute is shifting particularly towards promoting summer internships, which enable students to receive PPOs. The summer internships usually last for two to three months, after the end of sixth semester of BTech curriculum.
