The Calcutta high court ordered IIT Kharagpur Director VK Tiwari to submit a fresh report on the next date of hearing on December 20.

While reacting to a report submitted by IIT Kharagpur Director, the Calcutta high court asked the institute whether it was misleading the court by giving lecture. The court was hearing the case of the death of a third-year student of IIT Kharagpur whose semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room on October 14, 2022. His parents had moved the court questioning the role of the institute’s authorities.

In November, following allegations from hostel wardens regarding ragging incidents, a bench had ordered the director of the institute to file a report on the steps taken to crack down on these incidents. The bench had also asked the IIT Kharagpur Director to name the students involved in ragging.

The court ordered IIT Kharagpur Director VK Tiwari to be present before it on December 20 and explain in person what he meant to say in a fresh report. The institute had earlier submitted a three-page report to the Calcutta high court giving details of the measures taken by the institute to prevent ragging in hostels.

Faizan’s parents had moved the court demanding action against the IIT Kharagpur authorities. His mother had also written a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleging that his son did not commit suicide, rather he was murdered. A copy of the letter was also sent to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who had earlier requested his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to carry out a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of Faizan who belongs to Tinsukia in Assam.
