IITKGP student’s death: Institute, police submit reports before HC
The Calcutta high court had sought separate reports from the institute and the district police in the alleged ragging of Faizan Ahmed, whose semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room on October 14, 2022, at IIT Kharagpur.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur submitted a three-page report to the Calcutta High Court giving details of the measures taken by the institute to prevent ragging in hostels. The court had sought separate reports from the institute and the district police in the alleged ragging of Faizan Ahmed, whose semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room on October 14, 2022, at IIT Kharagpur.
Next hearing on November 30
The additional superintendent of police in Paschim Medinipur district of Bengal also filed a report on the progress of the investigation. Justice Rajasekhar Mantha directed the advocates involved in the case to maintain strict confidentiality about the contents of the report. The matter has been posted for hearing on November 30.
Faizan’s parents had moved the court demanding action against the IIT Kharagpur authorities. His mother had also written a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan alleging that his son did not commit suicide, rather he was murdered. A copy of the letter was also sent to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who had earlier requested his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee to carry out a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of Faizan who belongs to Tinsukia in Assam.
The court had on November 10 directed the institute director to name the students involved in "ragging" in his report. “This court is interested to know as to what steps have been taken by the said wardens and the Management of the IIT, Kharagpur, after receipt of information of what appears to this court to be a clear case of ‘ragging’,” Justice Rajasekhar Mantha had said.
