Anna University has adopted the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2019, as per which it will levy 18 per cent GST for issuing migration and duplicate certificates, incorporating corrections in certificates for graduates, giving certificates for photocopies of answer sheets, on the fee for issuing date and month of award of degree certificates and the certificate verification fee.

A circular to this effect was issued by the Controller of Examination (CoE). The services which are part of the curriculum are exempted under GST. All other services are taxable as per GST Act 2017, the circular read. There will be no GST on exam fees, revaluation fees, transcript fees and degree certificate, rank certificate of current students.

Anna University vice-chancellor R Velraj said the varsity would soon form a panel which would review the revaluation fees following representation from the students. He said the students needed to pay INR 700 per answer sheet to get their paper reevaluated.

He said this after inaugurating a two-day book exhibition at the university. The syllabus for the first-year students has been trimmed to some extent. More than one lakh books were put on display at the exhibition.

He further that students should be taught in mother tongue as they would learn better if they study subjects such as engineering in their regional language. “Learning professional courses such as engineering in Tamil will help students become better professionals,” he said and added that in order to develop Tamil Nadu, education in native language should be promoted.
