Chennai: Guidelines amended to fill seats in top engineering colleges

In Chennai, rules have been tweaked a bit to fill the seats in top engineering colleges including Anna University. The higher education department has introduced new guideline for engineering aspirants where they need to pay fees within seven days of seat allotment in online engineering counselling.

The higher education minister K Ponmudi said, "If students fail to pay the fees, their allotment would be cancelled and those who opted for upward movement in the same round will get the preference. The remaining vacant seats will be added to subsequent rounds," as reported by TOI.

Online engineering counselling extended to two months

The online counselling process for the engineering admissions has been also extended to two months which was earlier one month only. An official from the higher education department said, "Each round now will take 14 days, including seven days for paying the tuition fees and joining the college."

Anna University VC R Velraj said, "Out of 600 vacancies at Anna University campuses last year, 419 students did not join the college after selecting the seats in the engineering counselling. The new rule may bring down the vacancies in the university's four campuses to just 100 which can be filled through lateral entry counselling."

"The engineering counselling will be held only after NEET results. So, students who have got high scores may opt out of engineering counselling. Still, we expect some vacancies. However, it will be very minimal next year," added the VC.
