IIT Roorkee scientists develop dopamine sensor to detect neurological diseases
The scientists of IIT Roorkee have developed a dopamine sensor to detect neurological diseases like schizophrenia and Parkinson's at an early stage.
A team of scientists at IIT Roorkee have developed a dopamine sensor to detect neurological diseases like schizophrenia and Parkinson’s at an early stage.
The level of dopamine chemical changes in the brain of patients of these diseases and this sensor can measure the dopamine levels and can detect even a small change in its level. Most of these diseases are not completely curable but early detection helps in controllling the advancement of disease.
IIT Roorkee sensor can play significant role in medical field
The sensor is expected to play a significant role in the medical field due to its ability to detect changes in dopamine level. Prof. Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, “I would like to congratulate the research team for working on such an important problem and contributing towards the diagnosis of mental illnesses which affect a large fraction of our population," as reported by India Today.
Prof Soumitra Satapathi said, "Our present study opens up the possibility of designing a point-of-care device which will be suitable for detecting the amount of dopamine in real samples.”
The IIT Roorkee research team was led by Prof Soumitra Satapathi, Department of Physics and the other team members are Dr. Manisha Chatterjee and Prof. Partha Roy, Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering; Prathul Nath, Anshu Kumar, Vishal Kumar, Department of Physics; Sachin Kadian, and Prof. Gaurav Manik, Department of Polymer and Process Engineering.
The team mixed a material called graphene quantum dot with sulfur and boron for fabricating these sensors.
