Kannabiran appointed Director in-charge of NIT Trichy

The post was earlier handled by Mini Shaji Thomas, who completed her five-year tenure recently. She was appointed as the first woman Director of the institute in 2016.

The Union Ministry of Education appointed G Kannabiran, senior professor of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy and Director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, as Director in-charge of NIT Trichy. Earlier, the post was handled by Mini Shaji Thomas, who completed her five-year tenure recently. She was appointed as the first woman Director of the institute in 2016. She will now rejoin Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. 

Kannabiran has been serving the institute for more than three decades. He had earlier served as head of the department and dean of research and consultancy and had served as the national expert of Asian Productivity Organization for international research studies in the areas of higher education and smart manufacturing, said a release issued from the institute. 

Kannabiran is the recipient of Commonwealth Professional Fellowship, Fulbright Fellowships, and a British Council Study Fellowship.  

A heritage centre was inaugurated at NIT Trichy recently to showcase the 56 years of the institute’s history. The 2,400-square-foot centre in the administrative block has touchscreens and digital gadgets to watch the old events that were digitised. 

NIT Trichy and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Thiruvananthapuram, have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to set up a centre for carrying out research and development on the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) on the NIT Trichy campus. C-DAC, a premier research and development organisation of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, was given the responsibility of developing a complete solution for ERSS to implement a ‘One India one emergency number 112’ by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
